Reconsidering the miracle argument on the supposition of transient underdetermination

چکیده
In this paper, I will show that the Miracle Argument is unsound if one assumes a certain form of transient underdetermination. For this aim, I will first discuss and formalize several variants of underdetermination, especially that of transient underdetermination, by means of measure theory. I will then formalize a popular and persuasive form of the Miracle Argument that is based on “use novelty”. I will then proceed to the proof that the miracle argument is unsound by means of a mathematical example. Finally, I will expose two hidden presuppositions of the Miracle Argument that make it so immensely though deceptively

For a discussion of epistemic values, This paper examines the state of the field of ‘‘science and values’’—particularly regarding the implications of the thesis of transient ...
متن کاملOn choosing between deterministic and indeterministic models: underdetermination and indirect evidence
There are results which show that measure-theoretic deterministic models and stochastic models are observationally equivalent. Thus there is a choice between a deterministic and an indeterministic model and the question arises: Which model is preferable relative to evidence? If the evidence equally supports both models, there is underdetermination. This paper first distinguishes between differe...
متن کاملBain Weinberg on Qft : Demonstrative Induction and Underdetermination
In this essay I examine a recent argument by Steven Weinberg that seeks to establish local quantum field theory as the only type of quantum theory in accord with the relevent evidence and satisfying two basic physical principles. I reconstruct the argument as a demonstrative induction and indicate it’s role as a foil to the underdetermination argument in the debate over scientific realism.
متن کاملA Historically Informed Modus Ponens Against Scientific Realism: Articulation, Critique, and Restoration
There are two primary arguments against scientific realism, one pertaining to underdetermination, the other to the history of science. While these arguments are usually treated as altogether distinct, P. Kyle Stanford’s ‘problem of unconceived alternatives’ constitutes one kind of synthesis: I propose that Stanford’s argument is best understood as a broad modus ponens underdetermination argumen...
متن کاملHow the growth of science ends theory change
This paper outlines a defense of scientific realism against the pessimistic meta-induction which appeals to the phenomenon of the exponential growth of science. Here, scientific realism is defined as the view that our current successful scientific theories are mostly approximately true, and pessimistic meta-induction is the argument that projects the occurrence of past refutations of successful...
